Common laptop upgrades

01.

Additional Storage

Many laptops come with insufficient storage these days. Consider a larger capacity SSD for more space or add an extra drive where possible. Especially handy for storing downloads or essential data backups.

02.

Solid State Drive (SSD)

A huge speed boost can be had by upgrading to a solid state drive from a regular HDD. Can be a standard Sata SSD or an M.2 Nvme drive if supported. Get the fastest and best your machine can support.

03.

Memory (RAM)

Unlock the potential of your laptop with additional RAM . While today’s bare minimum is 4gb, upgrading to 8gb, 16gb or 32gb can give your laptop that extra oomph you’ve been looking for. If you want to have more browser tabs and memory hungry applications open at once, more RAM is what you need.

04.

Graphics card

Although less common than a PC, some laptops can have the graphics card replaced. User2 specialises in graphics upgrades so you can play the latest games.

05.

Cooling

Some laptops have a habit of reaching their maximum temperature and slowing down to compensate. Often this is due to the cooling system being clogged or needing new thermal paste.

06.

Wi-Fi

Does the wifi on your laptop seem slower than on other devices? It could be that your internal wireless card can be upgraded or replaced by a much faster USB dual band adapter.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Most older laptops will allow you to access and upgrade your RAM, but if you have a modern laptop, accessing the RAM can be difficult and sometimes not possible. Many new laptops have RAM fixed to the motherboard and are not upgradeable. We can advise if you bring in your laptop or provide the full make and model number. Upgrading from 4gb to 8gb, 16gb or 32gb can make all the difference in performance.

To increase your laptop’s storage, the size of the SSD will need to be increased. Sometimes it will be possable to image the existing installation to a larger SSD or it may need a fresh installation of the operating system and applications.  Some high specification or gaming laptops allow for two SSDs to be installed which is ideal.

The majority of laptops do not allow CPU upgrades, but it does depend on the model. We can check for you if you provide the model number or otherwise offer other upgrade solutions.

Overheating in laptops is usually the result of a lack of airflow through your system. Are you using it on your sofa or bed and blocking the air vents underneath ? Otherwise, dust or animal hairs may have clogged the system and it may benefit from a strip, internal clean and application of new thermal paste. If it becomes a chronic issue then you may also need to replace the fans but whatever the cause, you’re advised to get it checked out before it does irrevesible damage to the CPU or graphics chip.
