Data Recovery

Whether for home or business, the loss of personal data, photographs, or the core of a business operation is traumatic. Consequently, we provide a suite of data recovery services to help you get up and running as quickly as possible.

Ideally, every business or home user with important data should back up on a regular basis. However, when you’re caught unaware, a hard drive fails and no backup exists, User2 Computers in Edinburgh are here to help.

Data Recovery Edinburgh

How does it work?

Our first course of action is to use specialist data recovery tools available in our Edinburgh workshops. Failing this, we will send the drive to one of our partners for further investigation. Component based repair and recovery is then attempted in a clean laboratory environment. Although there is a minimum charge for data recovery, we will keep you informed of any costs at each step of the way.

Common data recovery

01.

Recovery from formatted drives

Accidentally pressed the wrong button, deleted critical files or formatted the drive entirely?  We can bring back your data.

02.

Faulty Hard drives (HDD)

The dreaded “no operating system found” error or a clicking sound almost always means the drive is not accessible.

03.

Solid state drive (SSD)

Super fast and reliable, but often harder to recover data from an SSD. Firstly bring it in for assessment.

04.

External backup drives

Can be the same recovery process as an internal drive but hopefully as easy as a faulty external enclosure.

05.

RAID systems

Depending on the type of RAID configuration, a failed drive within a RAID array can be challenging, but we have the processes to help.

06.

USB Sticks

There is nothing more annoying than snapping off the connection, but some micro-soldering can recover your valuable data.

07.

Removable memory

SD, Micro SD and other memory cards can all potentially have data retrieved.

08.

Emails

Outlook and other email clients can sometimes become corrupted. We can attempt recovery using specialised tools.

Do you need more data recovery advice or guidance?

If you have a device with data access issues, bring it into one of our stores as soon as you can. Repeated access of a faulty drive reduces the chance of successful data recovery so time really is of the essence.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

We have an in house data recovery service to assist with this. Data is generally easier to recover from a traditional SATA hard drive rather than SSD. When we cannot recover data in house, we can send off the drive to one of our partners for more in depth analysis. This would generally be the case when read heads have crashed, and strip down and internal component replacement is required in a clean laboratory environment.

If there is physical damage to the USB stick, it may be possible to resolder connections to get the data recovered. If the memory chips are faulty then it’s unlikely that data will be recoverable.

Initial investigation through deleted email folders would be the first place to look. Depending on the type of hosted email exchange service you use and type of licences (ie Microsoft 365) may mean you can access deleted archive data. Ideally, we would advise a managed cloud to cloud email backup service and this being the case we would look to recover from that.

As long as the drive itself isn’t encrypted with the likes of Bitlocker, there’s a good chance that we will be able to recover data from a dead machine and transfer onto a new device or data back up drive.
