Common viruses

01.

Traditional virus

Trojan, keylogger, worm, and boot are just a few types of virus. They can all make their way on to your system and make your IT life a misery.

02.

Malware

Malware is very common, with social engineering often the cause of infection. Often these programs come from infected websites that you have visited.

03.

Ransomware

One of the new types of infection. Ransomware can hold your data hostage and make the system unusable until a ransom is paid. But would you hand over payment details? Regular (off machine) back ups are essential for your protection against this type of attack.

04.

Spyware

Logging everything you do and sending it who knows where. Infections like this can steal your personal information without you being aware.

05.

Junkware

Usually comes in the forms of programs offering a free system tune up or promising to ‘optimise your registry’.

06.

Toolbars

These can cause your web browser to run slowly, redirect you to infected web sites or send information to 3rd parties. Just don’t be tempted to download them.

Virus Removal FAQs

Yes, we can remove all types of viruses, keyloggers, trojans and other malware from systems. Where badly infected or where system corruption is severe, we would recommend a system reinstallation followed by good anti virus software protection thereafter. Virus entry point is often by clicking on an infected link in an email or browsing to an unsafe website or clicking on a spoof advertising banner.

Although less common than a Windows based system, an Apple device is still vulnerable to virus attack and precautions need to be taken.

If your email account has been compromised and someone has gained access to emails and all your contacts, this is likely due to poor password security and lack of 2FA multi factor authentication. We would still suggest a full virus and malware clean of your machine, but also securing your email account properly.

Social engineering is one of the commonest causes of fraudulent attack today. Typically someone from “your bank” or “Microsoft” or “BT” or “Virgin” will call and say they can fix a problem with your account if you download a file or run a program. This kind of contact is always fraudulent. If you do allow access, the hacker will harvest passwords, email and contract details, bank details etc. and probably ask for your card details for “fixing” your problem. If you’re unfortunate enough to fall for such a scam, disconnect from the internet, turn off the PC and bring it into us for full virus scan. Also contact your bank and card provider to make them aware you have been scammed.
